Marcus & Eva: 2
Classic and Contemporary Duets
Musical Director Tedd Firth
Bassist Marco Brehm
Directed by Lina Koutrakos
This first-ever duets show from Marcus and Eva will present the extraordinary works of a host of renown writers, bringing their celebrated voices and interpretive gifts to the songs of Rodgers & Hart, Bacharach & David, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Jimmy Webb, Roger Miller, and many more. Accompanied by musical director Tedd Firth and bassist Marco Brehm, two of the finest musicians currently on the scene, this show is directed by acclaimed singer/songwriter/director Lina Koutrakos, author of the Marcus & Eva staple "Don't I Love You". Marcus and Eva have been appearing together in each other's cabaret shows to enormous praise, and Eva is coming off her very successful first appearance at The Mabel Mercer Foundation's New York Cabaret Convention, an event at which Marcus previously appeared twice.
Eva Ladas and Marcus Simeone met on the Manhattan cabaret circuit. Since that fateful meeting, they have gone on to virtually define what one columnist recently described as a new "golden age of New York cabaret"; a reference to the quality and diversity of the new generation of performers now appearing on Manhattan's small stages. Both Marcus and Eva are universally regarded for their heart-wrenching interpretations of ballads and are equally at home with jazz, pop, and rhythm & blues; bringing their own flavor and passion to the material they touch. Writing about Eva in Cabaret Hotline, critic Stu Hamstra remarked "vocal abilities that are impossible to believe... her multi-lingual show had me on the edge of my seat for the whole, incredibly short, hour." Show Business critic David Hurst stated "Simeone has a beautiful voice that he wields with authority and elegance...[he] could easily play the top rooms in New York." This show will bring these two acclaimed voices together to create a truly memorable event.
''The presence of these two amazing vocalists on the
same stage, singing solos and duets, should be
recognized as a major event in NYC cabaret."
— Stu Hamstra, reviewing "2" in Cabaret Hotline, Nov. 18, 2004
"With their sweet, silvery voices, swapping solos
and sharing harmonies, [a] highly pleasing hour of
song that shows off each of them to advantage....
A smartly-conceived program"

— Peter Haas, reviewing "2" in Cabaret Scenes, Nov. 18, 2004

In this show, Marcus' first tribute of any kind, he covers not only one of the great influences on his own work, but one of the most enduring concert and recording artists of all time. "Answer Me," "Wonderful, Wonderful," "Misty," "There Goes My Heart," "It's Not For Me To Say," and "Chances Are" are among the towering hits which Johnny Mathis has enjoyed over more than five decades as a chart-topping icon.
Marcus will bring his own special magic to the songs Johnny made famous, as well as offer a personal homage to the man for whom Columbia Records pioneered the "greatest hits" album, now an industry tradition. Johnny Mathis, who began his career on small stages in San Francisco and New York, continues to sell out Radio City Music Hall and still holds the record for continuous weeks (490) of being on the Billboard Top Albums Chart.

In this show, Marcus covers a wide range of material from composers as diverse as Billy Strayhorn and the Gershwins to contemporary writers such as Maria Gentile and Nicholas Levin, who wrote the title song "Cat on a Leash" for the show. With no specific theme, there is an underlying thread about prejudice, about identity, and about facing the past through metaphorical nuances. In homage of this latest act, during its initial downtown run, critic Wayman Wong of The New York Daily News wrote: "Simeone proved once again that the sky's the limit for his stratospheric high tenor and his talent. He's got his own voice, as a singer and as an artist... a special sound that deserves to be heard."

Join Marcus as he celebrates Cabaret Month in NYC by doing two special performances of his acclaimed cabaret shows from 2002. Here's what the critics had to say:
"MOSTLY STANDARDS"
When it comes to high and heavenly voices, I doubt even St. Peter has heard one as angelic as Marcus Simeone's. In his latest show, "Mostly Standards," at The Duplex, he sings with a thrilling and ethereal tenor that makes him sound like the love child of Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor. Not surprisingly, he even does an exquisite job with a couple of tunes I'd associate with Olivor's signature style and arrangements: B. Mondlock's "Nightsong (I Could Love You)" and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening."... His silky and sinuous interpretations, in which he weighs each word, never sound substandard.
— Wayman Wong, NY Daily News, 2002
From his opener, "Stardust" through "An Affair to Remember" to "I Can Dream, Can't I" to "Yellow Roses on Her Gown" to a great swing version of "Miss Otis Regrets" to the best "Some Enchanted Evening" this side of Ezio Pinza, Simeone put conviction behind almost every sentiment he uttered; he barely wasted a gesture. In between songs, he was amusing — "I'm not here to give a lesson on the Great American Songbook," he joked.... By the time he'd finished a class act made classier by D. Jay Bradley at the piano, he'd produced some of the sweetest sounds and most meaningful thoughts to perfume venue air in a while.
— David Finkle, Back Stage, 2002
You only need to hear him sing a few notes to know that Marcus Simeone has a beautiful voice that he wields with authority and elegance.... His musical selections would be overwhelming in lesser hands, but Simeone's voice coupled with Jay Bradley's understated, elegant arrangements make for pleasurable listening indeed. Clearly, he's already got the heartthrob stage presence and "the voice." With a little polish on the technical side of his performance, Simeone could easily play the top rooms in New York.
— David Hurst, Show Business, 2002
"MOON OVER BROOKLYN"
Mr. Simeone's cabaret skills have matured since I first heard him in his debut shows a few years back.... Simeone has become, in just a few months, one of the stars of cabaret — soon to be a superstar. The vocals are still spectacular, and Marcus' boyish charm and charismatic style are still intact. The haunting vocals, covering several octaves, are astounding. A Marcus Simeone performance is an event that you will not soon forget, and in this show Marcus brings it all together onto a delightful hour of enchantment.
— Stu Hamstra, Cabaret Hotline, 2002
Judy's Chelsea is a jewel box of a cabaret room, located in the heart of Chelsea. Proclaimed the "best cabaret room in NYC" by Show Business in 2001, Judy's offers a full menu before the show, beginning at 7 pm. JudysChelsea.com
